Since 2004, over 1300 children have attended one of the highly popular Tadpole PatrolÃÃÃÂ programs held on several lakes throughout the Cobbossee Watershed. ÃÃÃÂ Sponsored byÃÃÃÂ Kennebec Savings Bank andÃÃÃÂ Augusta Fuel Company,ÃÃÃÂ the three integrated levels of the TadpoleÃÃÃÂ Patrol program utilize the Friends 22' pontoon boat, the OTTER II, as a "floating classroom" where kids experience interactive, hands-on, FUN activities that focus on watershed protection and water quality.
Family Tadpole PatrolÃÃàWeÃâve heard for years that parents want to go on Tadpole Patrol too!ÃÃàSo here is a Tadpole Patrol experience for the whole family! ÃÃàDuring an hour long excursion, Ãâkids of all agesÃâ will be engaged in observing wildlife above and below the water, learn and share information about the human and natural history of the lake, and use some of our water monitoring equipment.ÃÃàWhat a fun experience for you and your child/grandchildren/friend to have together!
SpotterÃâs Amphibious Adventure! What better way to explore the watershed than to explore both land and water!ÃÃàCruise aboard the OTTER II to a private island in the middle of the lake.ÃÃàOnce on the island we will explore, learn about the importance of riparian areas for wildlife, the benefits of preserving wild spaces, and the basics of the ÃâLeave No TraceÃâ method of enjoying nature.ÃÃàOffered on Cobbossee and Annabessacook Lake and open to children ages 8 and up.
TheÃÃÃÂ originalÃÃÃÂ Tadpole Patrol (Level 1) is geared for children entering grades 2-3-4 and allows participants to experience the ecology of the lake first hand through exploration, observing wildlife (eagles, fish and zooplankton) and learning the basics of water testing by using professional equipment. Attendees earn aÃÃÃÂ Tadpole Patrol badge, t-shirt and prize grab bag. Each 2.5 hour session can accommodate up to (12) children.
TP Patrol II-LSI! (Lake Science Investigators) (Level 2) was added in 2008 for children entering grades 4-5-6 and is geared for older children or those who have already attended Tadpole Patrol. Activities for TP Patrol II-LSI! are more science-based, with participants performing water quality tests and recording data in their own LSI journal. Wildlife observations are conducted and recorded using binoculars for species above the water, while our underwater camera allows kids to 'spy' on theÃÃàaquatic life ÃÃàbeneath the waterÃâs surface. Participants also learn about the threat of invasive aquatic plants, and begin to identify native and non-native species. Attendees receive a FriendÃâsÃÃàwaterproof knapsack in which to keep their LSI Journal and other items dry. Each 3-hour sessionÃÃàcanÃÃàaccommodate up to (8)ÃÃàparticipants.
TP3 - Jr. Lake Monitors (Level 3) wasÃÃÃÂ new in 2010ÃÃÃÂ and is offered for youth entering grades 6 & up.ÃÃÃÂ Participants will be trained in proper water quality data measurement techniques; conduct precise measurements themselves; and then compare and analyze their results to data recorded by the Cobbossee Watershed District over the past 30+ years.ÃÃÃÂ Results will be posted on the Friends website for others to observe.ÃÃÃÂ Pre-requisite of TPII-LSI! is required.ÃÃÃÂ Participants will receive a certificate of achievement and a Friends calculator/ruler.ÃÃÃÂ Each 3 hour session can accommodate up to (8) young adults.
