Nature Day Camps

Nature Day Camps are held during February, April and summer school vacation periods at area camps that provide us with room to roam and explore local ecosystems - both on and off the lake! Do you want to get your kids outside and away from the TV and X-Box? Then the Friends Nature Day Camps are just the ticket - with a focus on providing campers with an opportunity to make connections to the natural world!

Winter and Spring Nature Day Camps are geared for children in grades 3-5, with (2) separate 2-day sessions held during February and April school vacation weeks. Each day centers around a different theme and introduces campers to activities like fishing (both ice and open water), snowshoeing, animal tracking, hiking, pond life and many other ecology related activities and games. Campers are responsible for their own transportation and lunch, and space is limited. Friends staff are assisted by subject-matter experts provided by the Cobbossee Watershed District, Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Department of Environmental Protection, AmeriCorps, local educators and personnel from local sporting & outdoor businesses.

Summer Nature Day Camp - Due to overwhelming response to our Winter and Spring Nature Day Camps, the Friends started offering a week long version of our nature-based program in 2010.  Summer Nature Day Camp is held at the YMCA Camp of Maine on Cobbossee Lake in East Winthrop.  Two 1-week sessions will be offered again this year - July 15-19, 2013 & July 29 - August 2, 2013 - for children entering grades 4-6 and will run from 8:30-4:30 pm daily.

The Summer Nature Day Camp provides campers with the opportunity to enhance their relationship with the natural world as they explore, observe and experience the nearby ponds, forests and fields (through hiking, fishing, swimming, and kayaking); record observations in their own nature journal; learn basic wilderness skills; and participate in ecology skits, crafts and games.  Campers will also be treated to a special session of "Tadpole Patrol" aboard the Friends 22' pontoon boat, the OTTER II.

The cost for each 5-day camp session is $195/pp, and includes lunch, afternoon snack, and drink.  Early registration is highly recommended, as space is extremely limited!
