The Otter II
This innovative approach to informing lake residents what they can do to help keep local lakes and ponds clean was innitiated in 2002 with the OTTER, a 20' pontoon boat, selling ice cream dock to dock as an "ice breaker" to discussing water quality issues. Today, the OTTER has been replaced by a slightly larger vessel, the 22' OTTER II, and is utilized during the week as a "floating classroom" for the Friends popular Tadpole Patrol education programs. On the weekends, the OTTER II moves to one of eleven water bodies of the Cobbossee Watershed, “hosted” by residents who provide us with dock space and an electrical hook-up for our freezers. Since that first summer of 2002, the original OTTER and the OTTER II have come in contact with tens of thousands of people, bringing smiles to faces with tropical music, good ice cream and providing information on how to protect our lakes.
