Since 2004, over 850 children have attended one of the highly popular Tadpole Patrol programs held on several lakes throughout the Cobbossee Watershed. Sponsored by Kennebec Savings Bank and Augusta Fuel Company, the three integrated levels of the Tadpole Patrol program utilize the Friends 22' pontoon boat, the OTTER II, as a "floating clasroom" where kids experience interactive, hands-on, FUN activities that focus on watershed protection and water quality.

The original Tadpole Patrol (Level 1) is geared for children entering grades 2-3-4 and allows participants to experience the ecology of the lake first hand through exploration, observing wildlife (eagles, fish and zooplankton) and learning the basics of water testing by using professional equipment. Attendees earn a Tadpole Patrol badge, t-shirt and prize grab bag. Each session can accommodate up to (12) children.

TP Patrol II-LSI! (Lake Science Investigators) (Level 2) was added in 2008 for children entering grades 4-5-6 and is geared for older children or those who have already attended Tadpole Patrol. Activities for TP Patrol II-LSI! are more science-based, with participants performing water quality tests and recording data in their own LSI journal. Wildlife observations are conducted and recorded using binoculars for species above the water, while our underwater camera allows kids to ‘spy’ on the aquatic life that live beneath the water’s surface. Participants also learn about the threat of invasive aquatic plants, and begin to identify native and non-native species. Attendees also receive a Friend’s waterproof knapsack in which to keep their LSI Journal and other items dry. Each session can accommodate up to (8) participants.

TP3 - Jr. Lake Monitors (Level 3) is new for 2010 and offered for youth entering grades 6 & up.  Participants will be trained in proper water quality data measurement techniques; conduct precise measurements themselves; and then compare and analyze thier results to data recorded by the Cobbossee Watershed District over the past 30+ years.  Results will be posted on the Friends website for others to observe.  Pre-requisite of TPII-LSI! is required.  Participants will receive a certificate of achievement and a Friends calculator/ruler.  Each session can accommodate up to (8) young adults.

Tadpole Patrol programs can also host individual groups, camps, recreation departments, daycare & home school programs, and even special events like birthday parties! (pending availability – please contact our office)
